Heathrow Airport

HEATHROW AIRPORT | Combined Heat and Power plant powered by VAS and Turboden

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

As part of the Airport's expansion and realization of the new Terminal 2, and in line with the objective to reduce the facility's carbon footprint, Heathrow Airport Ltd. constructed the Biomass Energy Center centered around a 11,5MWth VAS biomass thermal oil plant powering a 1,8MWe Turboden ORC unit.

7,8MWth of thermal energy generated after electricity production by the ORC, are used in Terminal 5 (opened in year 2008) and in the new Terminal 2 (opens in June 2014). Both Terminals are connected to the Heathrow Biomass Energy Center by two new installed thermal conductions (both running below the two runways of the airport).
